Healthy Habits Start with Prevention

You and your family can often avoid costly and time-consuming general dentistry treatments by adhering to prevention. Prevention means dental exams and teeth cleanings coupled with at-home care.

Visit Your Dentist Every Six Months

The American Dental Association and most dentists agree that six-month checkups and teeth cleanings lower the risks of tooth decay and gum disease.

Brush and Floss Twice Daily

Brush and floss at least twice daily; if you can do so after every meal, all the better. Additionally, be sure to spend time when you clean your teeth.

Enjoy a Tooth-Healthy Diet

We recommend lowering your sugar intake and implementing foods and drinks that are less acidic than fruit juice and soda. Water is the best refresher!

Extremely Gentle

I am a new patient with Dr. Barr and have been very pleased so far. The first appointment was to meet with Dr. Barr to review my dental health. She was very polite and professional. She offered some great suggestions on future care but was not pushy at all. Today I had my first cleaning with Jillian and she did a wonderful job! She was ahead of schedule, told me what she was doing on each step and showed interest in hearing about my concerns. She was extremely gentle and seemed to be very thorough. The office staff have all been very pleasant and the office seems very clean. The aviaries are also a nice distraction. I am very pleased with my decision to switch dental offices and will be a long term patient.

Frequently Asked Questions

General dentistry is a branch of dentistry focused on maintaining oral health for patients of all ages through a combination of preventive care and early diagnosis and treatment. In most cases, a general dentist is an individual’s (or a family’s) primary dental care provider and is vital providing educating patients about proper oral hygiene practices and ensuring that minor dental issues do not turn into serious problems.

General dentists offer a range of dental services, including checkups, teeth cleanings, dental fillings, root canals, extractions, and cosmetic procedures like teeth whitening. Broadly speaking, general dentists tend to focus on treating more common issues, and, in cases in which specialized treatment beyond the general dentist’s expertise is required, will typically provide a referral to a specialist.

In short, this comprehensive care, along with early detection and treatment of a variety of dental problems, makes general dentistry foundational to the maintenance of healthy teeth and gums. It’s for this reason that a minimum of two visits per year to one’s general dentist are recommended.

Preventive Dentistry Maintains Healthy Smiles

Woman smiling in treatment chair at dentist in Brandon, FLIf you want a healthy, problem-free smile to avoid the need for complex procedures, prevention is the name of the game. Comprehensive exams every six months allow our dental team to stay current with your oral health needs. If we detect a problem like a cavity or gum disease, we can treat it promptly before it causes pain or requires more complex treatment to address.

Six-month teeth cleaning appointments with one of our skilled hygienists help you avoid gum disease by removing plaque and tartar buildup that your toothbrush and floss miss. Symptoms like bleeding or swollen gums indicate gingivitis, and prompt treatment can help stop it in its tracks before it damages your oral health.

Oral Cancer Screenings with VELscope®

When you visit us for your six-month checkups, ask about our oral cancer screenings using VELscope®. VELscope is a hand-held device that your Brandon dentists use to detect abnormal tissue earlier than most other technologies.

VELScope emits soft, blue light to find potentially harmful areas or precancerous or cancerous cells. We can complete this simple screening process in as little as two minutes.

The benefit of oral cancer screenings is detecting abnormalities before they become more serious health complications. Early detection allows for a more positive prognosis and expanded treatment options.

We firmly believe that prevention is the best medicine, and we are proud to offer VELscope cancer screenings to all our patients!

Patient getting digital x-ray at dentist in Brandon, FL

Safe, Low-Dose Digital X-Rays

Digital x-rays are faster, safer, and more environmentally friendly than traditional silver-oxide x-rays. These images require up to 80 percent less radiation and are no longer developed in caustic and damaging chemical solutions.

Instead, the new system immediately transmits images to a treatment room computer monitor for instant access by both the professional team and the patient. We can also manipulate digital x-ray images to enlarge, highlight, magnify, and invert them to give the patient and doctor the information needed to make accurate diagnoses and confident treatment decisions.

Patient getting nitrous oxide sedation at dentist in Brandon, FL

Nitrous Oxide or "Laughing Gas"

Patients with dental anxiety can benefit from the extra relaxation of nitrous oxide, commonly called laughing gas. Nitrous oxide won’t knock you out, but It will put you in a nice, mellow and relaxed state for a calm experience where you won’t be as aware of what’s happening around you.

Our team will monitor you during your procedure as you inhale the gas through a small breathing mask. Before you leave, we will have you breathe pure oxygen for several minutes to clear your head so you can safely drive home from your appointment.

Panoramic X-Rays

Routine digital dental x-rays are invaluable for detecting cavities, infection, and bone loss in certain parts of the mouth. Sometimes our dentists need a more comprehensive view, and that’s when they turn to panoramic x-rays.

As you might guess from the name, a panoramic x-ray provides a single continuous image of your entire mouth from one side to the other. In a panoramic x-ray, our dentists can see all your teeth, upper and lower jaws, and surrounding structures in a single scan.

Our dentists use panoramic x-rays to identify infections, impacted teeth, jaw abnormalities, tumors, and growths.
